Overview

A residential house had been built and there was a significant hillside that had been removed to provide space for a driveway. After the excavation of the site, the homeowner had a slope that was composed of very fine sands that needed to be stabilized. The slope was so unstable and steep that traditional methods of placing topsoil were difficult to utilize.

Problem

A residential house had been built and there was a significant hillside that had been removed to provide space for a driveway. After the excavation of the site, the homeowner had a slope that was composed of very fine sands that needed to be stabilized. The slope was so unstable and steep that traditional methods of placing topsoil were difficult to utilize.

Solution

ECBVerdyol Biotic Earth was recommended as a topsoil replacement and growth medium. Biotic Earth was applied at a rate of 3500 lbs/acre, along with an Earthbound tackifier applied at 35 lbs/acre. Seed and fertilizer were mixed into the Biotic Earth slurry. The material was then covered with Flex Guard, from Mat Inc. at a rate of 3,500 lbs per acre for erosion control.

Application

Results

The slope was fully covered with lush vegetation just eight weeks after initial application. The few areas of thin vegetation are the results of deer traffic and feeding upon the new vegetation, but will soon fill in. The growth is impressive given the extremely dry conditions in the months immediately after installation. Given Biotic Earth’s proven track record on sandy soils all expectations are that the site will continue to improve in the successive years.
